Wat makes a Movie Tick?

That's a multi billion dollar question that the film industries all over the world are trying to answer. Is it a bird...is it a plane..No its just another film. That is disheartening to know. I think more than the excellence of the entire movie its the small bouts of intelligence in the movies that make them excellent. For e.g. i was thinking abt Khuda Ke liye. What this movie had offered the audience that it seemed so good. To the fanatics its more than sufficient that movie is coming from Pakistan. For me it was Nasserudin Shah's 2 min act that did the job. If u see him delivering the dialogues with such uplomb and genuiness u cant help admiring him. Similarly if u see the Bicycle thieves u can't help admiring the neo-realistic approach the director and writer have taken. But for me i dont even understand what it means. I treat the scene in which the alleged thief gets a fit and policeman goes to search his house. Their meagre household generates a surprising sympathy for the thief. This sympathy is not at the expense of the sympathy for protagonaist who has lost his bicycle or for that matter his livelihood. Its the sheer balance which De Sica created and was able to maintain it that did the job for me. In the above two examples i have talked about the visual experience and the emotional experience. 

There is more to it. Some films are just good for the feel good factor that they carry. I feel sorry for the movies that come under this category because they are grossly underrated and are no less as compared to classics. Films are lighthearted and can be watched for fun. Some films are there just to open your eyes to what's going around. Some films tell you a story and take you to a world of fantasy where all the whackiest of things come true. These are the movies i like the most coz they make you do one thing...n that is to dream. Next comes the animated flicks meant for children. These are the most intelligently made films. They have to cater to an audience who cry and whine all the time. Its not easy to please them. So keeping up the fun factor is quintessential. But the fun is not at the expense of content. These are one of the most philosophical movies. They are the ones which have stuff. Stuff to learn from and imbibe in your life. If cheesy double meaning flicks are the worst and the grossest then these animated flicks are the purest.

So is it a bird...or a plane...or a good flick??
